Congressional Hearings in Millar Library


 

Portland State University does not have all of the U.S Congressional hearings. We do have the majority of hearings from 1973 onward in paper and/or microfiche formats. The hearings are arranged in Superintendent of Documents Call Number (SuDoc number). The following is a guide to hearings in Millar Library:

1997 to present:

Hearings from this era are available in a variety of ways:

Location:

Hearings are located on the 4th floor in both paper and microfiche formats.

Note: Newer hearings are far more likely to be listed in Vikat than older hearings.

July 1976 to 1996:

Many of these records are in Vikat. Check the paper or online indices as well.

Location:

Hearings are located on the 4th floor in both paper and microfiche formats. Records may be located in Storage as well. Please check the card shelf list in the 4th Floor Government Information workroom to find the correct location.

1970 to June 1976:

Some of these records are indexed in Vikat. Check the paper or online indices as well.

Location:

If we have copies of the hearings, they are most likely located in storage. Please check the card shelf list in the 4th Floor Government Information workroom.


December 1941 to 1969:

These are probably not in Vikat. They are indexed in some reference works.

  • CIS Congressional Committee Hearings Index - paper, located in Reference Z 1223 .A2 C6
  • GPO Monthly Catalog - available online or in paper at Z 1233 .A18

Location:

There is a low probability that PSU will have copies of these hearings. Please check the card shelf list in the 4th Floor Government Information workroom. You might try Reed College and/or Multnomah County Library to check their records. University of Oregon and Oregon State University have older collections with holdings from the early 1900s.

Early 1800s to November 1941:

These are probably not in Vikat. They are indexed in some reference works.

Note: Congress did not have a significant number of published hearings prior to 1833.
