“The C Word: Using Author Rights to Enhance
Scholarship in the Digital Research Environment”
Spring Symposium

We are right in the middle of a national—no, international—transition from traditional print publication to the brave new world of digital publication (open access journals, digital institutional repositories, etc.).
As a researcher and author you can either make use of this transition to enhance your scholarship, or you can fall victim to it. This symposium is about empowerment, about the options you have for the use and distribution of your own scholarly work—most of which revolve around retaining your rights when you publish.
It is also about access to the work of others. Why are we paying to publish in journals libraries can no longer afford to carry, when we could be publishing in open access venues and “democratizing our scholarship”?
This symposium will explore the implications of this transition, with speakers ranging from national figures to Portland State faculty. Among the topics addressed: publishing in an open access journal, modifying copyright agreements, promotion and tenure considerations, proactively managing rights, and institutional repositories (or “digital libraries”).
