Vikat is the Portland State University online catalog for books. Use VIKAT to search for books by keyword, author, title, subject. VIKAT locates journals by periodical title, not by subject. Boolean operators can limit or expand searches depending on which one is used.

Boolean Operators

AND Limits search by added word or phrase ex: cybernetics and society
OR Expands search by searching for both words or phrases ex: cybernetics or cyborg
NOT Limits search by excluding second word or phrase ex: cybernetics not engineering

When searching VIKAT for books on Cyborgs try using Cybernetics as the keyword.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias are useful to gain background information on a topic. They are generally alphabetical in arrangement and supplement their information with small bibliographies.

Indexes, Databases

Print indexes are excellent tools to locate journal articles on a variety of topics. In general they can be searched by subject. Databases are online indexes. Some, though not all, databases at the PSU library are full-text.

A multidisciplinary database that includes full-text access to many of the journal articles it contains. EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite has a broad scope and is an excellent starting source for finding journal articles.

Index to journals in Biology and Biomedicine. Try searching Biophysics/Biocybernetics and limiting with the Boolean operators "and" and "or" to limit your search.

Full-text access to the Congressional Quarterly Researcher and Weekly. The CQ Researcher analyzes current, and often controversial topics. The CQ Weekly covers the status of major legislation in Congress.
