Creating Faculty/Librarian Connections: Project Description

Collaborating for Information Literacy

Collaborating for Student Success

Project Synopsis | Project Timeline

Millar Library Project

The Creating Connections: Collaborating For Information Literacy project funded by the Office of Academic Affairs grant addresses the need for greater collaboration between Librarians and Faculty in developing student-centered programs and curricula. As academic libraries shift their focus from managing collections to providing dynamic services and instruction, the professional responsibilities of librarians are shifting as well. We are adapting to this new environment by creating technology-based models of instruction and service delivery. But it is clear that this transition cannot be made in isolation. Librarian/Faculty collaboration may be the most significant factor in helping the 21st century student achieve success. The Library's project will provide a framework for collaboration between Librarians and Faculty and will support the integration of PSU Library's resources and services into the greater PSU community of scholarship. The Library project committee will work with committees from each of the other pilot projects funded by the "Enhancing Faculty Vitality" initiative to create an information literacy component for each project and to build the foundation for an ongoing collaborative relationship. These efforts could include:

· Collaboratively develop a Web CT module for information literacy that is integrated into a Web CT course

· Create templates for instructors to use in developing online research modules for their courses

· Collaboratively develop web-based tutorials

· Offer virtual research assistance through chat and e-mail

· Faculty consultation in new course design or for an existing course in order to effectively integrate information literacy goals

Outcomes of the project will be:

· Increased student learning of information literacy skills

· Integration of assessment of information literacy into the curriculum · Integration of the Library into the PSU community of scholarship

· Increased student access to library research assistance and instruction

· Increased student use of library technology and instructional technologies

· Integration of information literacy standards into pilot project programs

· Increased communication and collaboration between Library Faculty and Departmental Faculty regarding learning goals and assessment of student learning

Creating Connections will address the goal of assisting students to successfully navigate the complexities of information that confront them in their academic career and beyond. The collaboration of Library and Departmental Faculty will serve as a prototype for future initiatives to integrate student learning throughout the institution, building on a foundation of enhanced communication and cooperation. It will develop a model for student learning through the use of information and communication technologies and position Portland State University among the forefront of those institutions embracing innovative instructional delivery.
