The Portland State University Online Catalog for books. Use VIKAT to search for books by keyword, author, title, subject. VIKAT locates journals by periodical title, not by subject. Boolean operators can limit or expand searches depending on which one is used.

Boolean Operators

AND Limits search by added word or phrase ex: arguments and euthanasia
OR Expands search by searching for both words or phrases ex: death penalty or capital punishment
NOT Limits search by excluding second word or phrase ex: euthanasia not assisted suicide

A multidisciplinary database that includes full-text access to many of the journal articles. EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite has a broad scope and is an excellent starting source for finding journal articles. Access limited to on-campus and proxy users.

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe: http://web.lexis-nexis.com/universe

LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe provides a variety of full text sources including: regional, national, and international newspapers; magazines; wire services and many other sources. Access limited to on-campus and proxy users.

Oregon Newspapers Fulltext: http://www.lib.pdx.edu/resources/databases/databases.html#o

Provides full text of articles from the Oregonian and other newspapers in the state. Access limited to on-campus and proxy users.

Statistical Universe: http://web.lexis-nexis.com/statuniv

A bibliographic database of statistical information, including national and international sources. Available in the PSU library, or at home through a PSU proxy account.

Terms to Help

Boolean Operators: And, Not, Or. See example above

Call Number: Library of Congress number. Each item has a designated call number.

Citation: Author, title, source, volume number (for journals or multi-volume sets),pages, year of a publication, place of publication (for books). You need this information to find the item in the library and to cite the item in your papers.

Index: A list of articles or books by subject . There are many different indexes for many different disciplines. To name only a few: Art Index, Humanities Index, Historical Abstracts, America History and Life, Biosis, ERIC, General Science Index, PsychLit, ABI/Inform, etc. An index will provide citations to articles.

Online Catalog: The online catalog will provide call numbers for books, journals, and other library materials.

Online Databases: Indexes that are available online.
