Finding Articles
Databases and indexes identify articles and in some cases other kinds of publications in the subject area covered. Many of the databases are comprehensive in their coverage of a subject area. You will need to look in Vikat, the Library's online catalog, to determine if the Library owns the publication.

names, topical terms, and geographic names have been reconciled with current Art Index headings. The file size is currently over 400,000 records, citing articles and reproductions from 420 periodicals.

The Grove Dictionary of Art: contains 45,000 articles on every aspect of the visual arts - painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography - from prehistory to the present day. Compiled over a period of 15 years, it represents the work of more than 6,800 scholars from around the world, each writing on his or her own specialist field of study. Historical Abstracts: Provides citations and abstracts for articles from 2,000 journals published worldwide in history, the social sciences, and related humanities. Includes citations to new books reviewed in key English-language history and review journals and to relevant dissertations. Good for witches. http://sb2.abc-clio.com:81/

JSTOR: Provides online full text access to backfiles of many scholarly journals (see list). JSTOR provides access to the complete backfile of the journals excluding the most recent five years. Multidisciplinary. http://www.jstor.org/cgi-bin/jstor/gensearch

Vikat is the Portland State University online catalog for books. Use VIKAT to search for books by keyword, author, title, subject. VIKAT locates journals by periodical title, not by subject. Boolean operators can limit or expand searches depending on which one is used.
