  • SEC & EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system): to look up specific filings, start from here.
  • SIC & NAICS: SIC Code (Standard Industrial Classification Code). Is a government tool that helps label products and industries. Enter industry or product type (not brand name). You may have to follow the broader categories, especially for industry overviews. NAICS (North American Industry Classification System). Is a new system designed to replace SIC. Conversion between NAICS codes and SIC codes is available here.

Datamonitor Company Profile via Business Source Premier
Detailed profiles of both public and private companies worldwide. Profiles include description, key facts, history, major products and services, top competitors, and SWOT analysis.
LexisNexis Academic Universe
The "Company Profiles" section includes detailed profiles or brief snapshots of both public and private companies from various sources. The "Company Financial" section provides detailed financial data such as stock information, earnings, financial ratios, etc.
Investext Plus
Profiles on major public companies worldwide. Covers business description, products, history, and financial analysis.
Wall Street Journal Online
Full text coverage from 1984 to present. Provides a broad range of information on businesses, industries, the economy, and sociopolitical factors that influence the business world.
International directory of company histories: HD2721 .I63 1988 (Reference)
Detailed histories of major companies.
Hoover's Online
A free website providing brief company profiles. It is especially useful for identifying top competitors in a certain industry or segment.

Mergent Online
After entering the database, select "Industry Reports". Mergent Online provides quarterly updated industry profiles of 22 sectors in North America since 2003. Each report covers the latest industry environment, market size and value, industry highlights, regulatory environment, market trends and outlook, and key references.
Business Source Premier
Do a general article search using "Advanced Search", then select "Industry Profiles" or "Market Research Reports". Such reports or profiles usually come from renowned trade publications.
Investext Plus
Full text reports for over 53 industries worldwide. Choose industry from the drop-down menu, and use keywords to narrow the results.
LexisNexis Academic Universe
Select "Business -> Industry & Market" for articles and reports from a large number of trade publications, and "Business -> Business News -> Industry News" from other industry related news.
Current Industrial Reports
Published by the Census Bureau, it provides monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity in the form of timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products.
