International Business Resource Desk @ globalEDGE
From the Center for International Business Education and Research at Michigan State University. Lists an extensive list of online resources that include not only the most widely used Web sites and databases, but also exclusive information such as the MSU-CIBER Market Potential Indicators.
International Business Resource Center
From the University of Kansas. Provides comprehensive listing of Web sites relating to international business, trade statistics, and other related information (e.g., lists of consulates and embassies).
VIBES: Virtual International Business and Economic Sources
From the University of North Carolina. Provides "over 2,800 links to Internet sources of international business and economic information," including "full-text files of recent articles and research reports, statistical tables and graphs, and portals (pages with links to other sources)."
Business Information on the Internet
Includes a selection of Internet sites, including those from UK, European and non-US sources useful for international business.

** Governments and international organizations are the largest producers of statistical data and research reports.

United Nations Statistics Division

Provides statistics in main categories such as economic, demographic & social, environment & energy, etc. Some data are freely available, while others are subscription-based. Highlights include:

  • UNESCO Statistics: "Global and internationally comparable statistics on education, science, technology, culture and communication." 
  • Human development report (HD72 .H85, Shelves): information on literacy, education, communication media and gender development
World Bank

Important source of information on economic, social and natural resource indicators. Look under "Data & Research" and "Publications." Highlights include:

  • World Development Indicators: CD-ROM database (2nd floor)
  • World development report (HC59.7 .W659, Reference): with focus on a different topic each year, contains selected indicators for over 200 countries.
OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)

Publishes statistics and reports related to member, sometimes non-member, nations. PSU Library offers access to SourceOECD, the online library for books, magazines & journals, and statistics from OECD. We have access to all data except for IEA data.

European Commission

"Publishes an extensive range of statistics and reports relating to the European Union and member countries." Its data central is called Eurostat.

Country Background Information

Business Source Premier (enhanced business searching interface)
Multiple country profiles and reports from various publishers are available from the BSP database. Time coverage varies, some go back 10 years.
Country Profiles from Library of Congress

Part of the Country Studies Program, formerly the Army Area Handbook Program, it offers "brief, summarized information on a country’s historical background, geography, society, economy, transportation and telecommunications, government and politics, and national security". Updated annually or more.

CIA World Factbook
Provides a general profile of a country, including economic, social, political, and demographic descriptions for every nation in the world. Descriptions provided in this database are brief. Also available via LexisNexis Academic Universe.

Country Statistics

Global Market Information Database (Core Statistics)
Provides extensive statistics (economic indicators, social indicators, and industry data) on over 350 markets and 207 countries. Data come from national statistical agencies, World Bank, IMF, trade associations, etc.
World Development Indicators: CD-ROM database (2nd floor)
Offers the World Bank's comprehensive development data, including social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental indicators back to 1960. Here is an example of what the data look like.
SourceOECD
An "online library" of statistical databases, books and periodicals. Major resources include OECD Economic Survey, OECD Economic Outlook, Main Economic Indicators, International Trade, etc. Covers various aspects of economies including education, economy, infrastructure, and trade.
International Financial Statistics
Published by the IMF (International Monetary Fund), it includes a broad range of time series data on exchange rates, balance of payments, international liquidity, money and banking, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions, government accounts, national accounts and population.
Nationmaster
Statistical data and ranking and other relevant information from various sources.
International Data Base (IDB)
Published by the Census Bureau's International Programs Center (IPC), IDB is computerized source of demographic and socioeconomic statistics for 227 countries and areas of the world. It combines data from country sources (especially censuses and surveys) with IPC's estimates and projections to provide information dating back as far as 1950 and as far ahead as 2050. Data coverage includes population, households, literacy, labor force, etc.
International Statistical Agencies
Compiled by the Census Bureau, here is a list of sites where most raw data come from. Most sites are in their native languages, although some may have an English version. A similar list is also available from the UN site.
GEOHIVE
"A site with geopolitical data, statistics on the human population, Earth and more. The main kind of data you can find here is on the population of regions, countries, provinces and cities. Next to that there are some statistics on economic factors like wealth, infrastructure; statistics on natural phenomena." Check out "charts" on the left navigation bar.
UN Statistics Division

Multiple statistical databases on a broad range of economic and social indicators. Major databases include Infonation, Population of Capital Cities of the World, and Social Indicators.

Eurostat

Comprehensive collection of European statistics, covering population, economy, industry and services, agriculture, external trade, transportation, environment, technology, etc.

Globalization Index

Annual assessment conducted by AT Kearney to measure the degree of globalization of countries. Each country is ranked based on its economic and social environment toward globalization.

2004 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index

Annual survey of CEOs, CFOs, and other top executives of Global 1000 companies, performed by AT Kearney, global management consulting firm. The report is available for free and can be downloaded in PDF.

EIU Country Intelligence
Provides detailed reports on country commerce (operating conditions and business regulations), country finance (financial regulations and conditions), business briefings, business intelligence and summary analysis.
GLOBUS/NTDB via STAT-USA
Contains the full text of trade information, economic data, import and export statistics, country market research reports, global trade directory and national export directory, compiled by 15 federal agencies. It contains over 150,000 time series, tables, and documents. NTDB is updated regularly. The most useful links for country information are the Country Commercial Guides and International Market Insight Reports.

Global Market Information Database (Core Statistics)
Provides extensive statistics (economic indicators, social indicators, and industry data) on over 350 markets and 207 countries. Data come from national statistical agencies, World Bank, IMF, trade associations, etc.
Investext
A "premier financial research database" that offers "investment, company and industry reports from over 500 brokers in North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East." Covers both public and private companies.

LexisNexis Statistical Universe
Provides references to statistical publications issued by federal and state governments, commercial publishers, trade and professional organizations, etc. A good place to start if you need statistical information but don't know where to look.
