Finding Articles: Using Databases to find journal articles about your subject

The following databases may be appropriate for your research in Metamorphoses: Academic Search Elite: a general index to a variety of journals, many are full text and can be e-mailed to yourself Congressional Universe: What happens in Washington, D.C. affects us all. Follow what is going on and find valuable information about a myriad of subjects in Congressional Hearings and Agency reports. CQ Researcher: The company Congressional Quarterly compiles wonderful overviews of important topics. A great place to start your research. Criminal Justice Abstracts: Criminal Justice Abstracts covers crime trends, crime prevention and deterrence, juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, police, courts, punishment and sentencing. EconLit: Scholarly literature about economics. This indexes journal articles as well as monographs. It is the most comprehensive guide to economic literature. Environmental Abstracts: If your subject affects or is affected by the environment, this is a really good place to find information. Although it does not have full text it is one of the most complete databases for the subject. Index to Current Urban Documents: ICUD Online is a fully searchable index of reports and research generated by local government agencies, civic organizations, academic and research organizations, public libraries, and metropolitan and regional planning agencies in approximately 500 selected cities in the United States and Canada. Oregonian: How are national topics influencing the local scene? Find our by searching full text online. PAIS: Public Affairs International Service indexes books, journal articles and government information. It covers a variety of languages and countries and so if an excellent place to begin your research if your topic has a political theme. This is a bibliographic database. Social Science Index: This bibliographic database encompass the social sciences including anthropology, criminology, economics, social work, and urban studies. Sociological Abstracts: How do people deal within a society? This bibliographic database will direct you to the sociological literature about your topic. Statistical Universe: If you need some statistics this is the best place to find them or find out if they exist. Much, but not all of this is full text. Just remember to take a hard look at the footnotes and methodology.
