AERONAUTICAL CHARTS

Aeronautical charts are shelved either in the map collection, or in government documents. Those in the map collection are filed by chart number in file cabinet-10. A few unfolded charts (e.g. North Pacific Route) are filed in map case-14, drawer 13. Only the most current charts are kept, and none of the charts are updated re. Notices to Airmen.

INDEXES

There are two sets of indexes to aeronautical charts, providing essentially the same information: (1) index charts and (2) catalogs.

The following standard index charts are filed in map case-14, drawer 13:

ONC (Operational Navigation Chart), 1:1,000,000
JNC (Jet Navigation Chart), 1:2,000,000
GNC (Global Navigation Chart), 1:5,000,000
TCP (Tactical Pilotage Chart), 1:5,000,000

The following catalogs/indexes for aeronautical charts are filed in a red plastic pamphlet box labeled Aeronautical Charts behind the reference desk on the 5th floor:

Aeronautical Charts and Related Products, National Ocean Service, 1996-98.
Aeronautical Charts and Publications, Defense Mapping Agency, 3rd ed., 1996-98
Aeronautical Chart User's Guide, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 4th ed. 1995.

MAP COLLECTION

The following three series are filed in the map collection. :

ONC- Operational Navigation Charts (1:1,000,000)

Designed for high speed at medium altitudes. In absence of Tactical Pilotage Charts (TPC), satisfies DoD requirements for enroute visual and radar navigation at low altitudes.

For map index see pages 35A and 35B, Aeronautical Charts and Publications, Defense Mapping Agency, 3rd. ed. (1996-1998)

JNC- Jet Navigation Charts (1:2,000,000)

Suitable for long-range, high altitude, high speed navigation. Shows large cities, roads, railroads, and drainage. Relief shown by contours, spot elevations and gradient tints.

For index map see pages 41A and 41B, Aeronautical Charts and Publications, Defense Mapping Agency, 3rd. ed. (1996-1998)

GNC- Global Navigation & Planning Charts (1:5,000,000)

Designed for long-range, high altitude, high speed. Principal cities, towns, drainage, primary roads and railroads, prominent culture, shaded relief, and spot elevations shown.

For index map see pages 36 (north polar projection) and 37 (south polar projection), Aeronautical Charts and Publications, Defense Mapping Agency, 3rd. ed. (1996-1998)

TPC- Tactical Pilotage Charts (1:500,000)

Very detailed charts. In remote areas of world can be substituted as road maps. For support of high speed, low altitude, radar and visual navigation at very low through medium altitudes.

For index map see pages 33-33C, Aeronautical Charts and Publications, Defense Mapping Agency, 3rd. ed. (1996-1998)

GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

The following aeronautical chart series are shelved in pamphlet boxes in the Government Documents collection. For index maps see, Aeronautical Charts and Related Products, National Ocean Service (1996-1998).
