CIA MAPS

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a major producer of thematic maps. Though generally political in nature, the theme various (e.g. demographic, language, ethnic groups, etc.) As expected from the mission of the Agency, many of its issues relate to areas of potential conflict (e.g. Golan Heights, Spratley Islands, Bosnia-Herzegovina, etc.)

In general, the maps come in two sizes:

  1. The folder-sized maps (and those somewhat wider (e.g 8 1/2 x 14 or more, which my be folded over) are filed in ring binders in alphabetical order by country, region, etc.). The binders are shelved behind the reference desk on the 5th floor:

    CIA maps: A-D
    CIA maps: E-L
    CIA maps: M-Q
    CIA maps: R-Z

  2. All larger sizes are filed in Map Case-17, drawer no.1.

The map library at the University of Texas site has reproduced many CIA maps on-line.
