DEFENSE MAPPING AGENCY

There are two major sets of Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) maps:
United States (1:50,000 topographic maps)
World/regional maps (scale varies)

UNITED STATES, SCALE=1:50,000 MAPS

The 1:50,000 series of domestic topographic maps is prepared and distributed for the DMA by the United States Geological Survey. They are filed alphabetically by state and alphabetically by map name within each state. See map case-12, drawers 1-3.

The index for the 1:50,000 series is currently out of print. However, recent maps in this series are indexed on CD-ROM and in paper copy in the basement:

Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications.

Recent issues of the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications are searchable via the Internet.

WORLD/REGIONAL DMA MAPS

This set of DMA maps consists of hundreds of maps of various kinds (e.g. general, planimetric, topographic, road maps, etc.) at various scales. Although essentially inactive (dating back to the time of the Army Map Service) this set often contains the only maps in the collection covering certain areas of the world.

DMA maps are arranged in lettered and numbered series (map case-12, drawers 6-15, and map case-13). Individual sheets are filed alphabetically within each series. To find maps on a particular area you must refer to one or other of the following indexes:

DMA Map Depository Catalog.

This catalog is the most complete record of holdings in the collection. There are also instructions on how to locate the series/sheets for area of the world. Of particular interest is series 1301, a large collection of maps covering most areas of the world. The catalog is kept behind the reference desk on the 5th floor of the library.

Defense Mapping Agency: Public Sale Topographic Maps and Publications: U.S. Geological Survey.

As implied by the title, the catalog applies only to DMA maps currently available, a very small portion of the total collection, most of which are out of print. Filed in the red pamphlet box, Indexes/USGS, behind the reference desk on the 5th floor.
