NAUTICAL CHARTS

All nautical charts are filed by chart number in map case 14. (The drawers with the blue square on them.) Only the most current charts are kept, and none of the charts are updated re. Notice to Mariners. Catalog/indexes for nautical charts are filed in red plastic pamphlet boxes labeled Nautical Charts behind the reference desk on the 5th floor.

In order to find a particular chart, you will need to have the chart number. The DMA catalog is the source for this. It is organized in sections, each section devoted to a region of the earth. From these chart indexes, you can find the chart number. Also, at end of each section (region) is a numerical list of maps.

The sections (regions) are also reproduced as separate publications, which are updated more frequently than the DMA catalog. Current ed. 3rd (1996-1998):

Region 2: Central and South America and Antarctica
Region 3: Western Europe, Iceland, Greenland and the Arctic
Region 4: Scandinavia, Baltic and the former Soviet Union
Region 5: Western Africa and the Mediterranean
Region 6: Indian Ocean
Region 7: Australia, Indonesia and New Zealand
Region 8: Oceania
Region 9: East Asia

Portland State keeps only series: 10,000-19,000 (North America).

At the back of the DMA Catalog is a section called, Miscellaneous Charts and Publications Index of Regions and Subregions: The World-General Nautical Charts, and The World-International Chart series.
