CIA MAPS

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a prolific producer of thematic maps. Though generally political in nature, the maps also address themes (e.g. demographic, language, ethnic groups, etc.) As expected based on the mission of the Agency, many of its issues relate to areas of potential conflict (e.g. Afghanistan, Golan Heights, Pakistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, etc.)

In general, the maps come in two sizes:

  1. The letter-sized maps (8 1/2 x 11) are filed in 3-ring binders in alphabetical order by country, region, etc. The binders are shelved in the Ready Reference area on the 2nd Floor.

  2. All larger sizes are filed by geographic region in Map Cases 17 & 18.

Note: Consult the Map Collection home page, where images of CIA maps of current interest are posted.
Additionally, the map library at the University of Texas has reproduced many CIA maps on-line, and you can also access some directly from the CIA World Factbook site.
